A Learning Moment

A friend and I were chatting about the obstacles to enjoying life that people bump into on their daily journey: change, judgment, guilt, doubt, the act of assuming, taking things personally – you know, the usual suspects.

And then she blurted out this pearl of wisdom: “You know, one way to get more enjoyment out of life is to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

I know. Silly her.

This sounds like something you would do on “Opposite Day” when up is down and right is wrong. But really it is a practice that you can do ANY day, and it’s guaranteed to help you enjoy the Ride.

When you’re uncomfortable and antsy, take a sec, notice that feeling, and recognize that you are about to have a learning moment. You’re about to get smarter if you’ll just pay attention and not block the learning with anger, a third glass of wine, or tuning out in front of the TV.

The ability to sit with that discomfort and learn your lesson du jour is what prevents that lesson from returning.

And that means one less speed bump as you head on down the road.

Comfy!
