The Tortoise and the Hare

Dario Franchitti won this year’s Indy 500 by slowing down.

Actually, he won it by stopping after 113 laps.

Huh?

The Indy “500” turned into the Indy 200, and then 166, as rain delayed and finally ended the race. After a 3-hour delay at 113 laps, all the racers took to the track…..except for Franchitti who suddenly had a punctured tire and had to pit.

As life would have it, that seemingly awful pit stop “put us on the strategy that won us the race,” Dario said. After fixing his flat and entering the track, there was another caution flag and Franchitti chose to stay on the track, rather than pit like all the leaders did. This was his pivotal moment. After a wreck, crazy traffic, and finally rain again on lap 162, Dario won his first Indy 500 at 166 laps.

“Who would have thought it? Can you believe it?!”

If he hadn’t stopped at 113, who knows what would have happened.

Even though it may seem like the worst thing to do, sometimes we have to slow down to win.
