Cold turkey all at once is the best way to break multiple unhealthy habits, rather than dealing with them one-by-one. A study in last week's edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine revealed that, among patients who smoke, had hypertension, and led sedentary lifestyles, those who dropped all bad habits at once fared better than those who did so sequentially. "What we found is if your ask for everything, you're more likely to get something," says Dr. David Lyman of Baylor College of Medicine. Co-author Valory Pavlik says this may be because of the pressure of accountability, since patients know they will have to talk about ALL bad habits with their counselor.
To mix the poultry metaphor: don't chicken out. Set big goals ("ask for everything") and enlist a buddy to check up on you to keep you on track.
