The Tortoise and the Hare
Dario Franchitti won this year’s Indy 500 by slowing down.
Actually, he won it by stopping after 113 laps.
Huh?
The Indy “500” turned into the Indy 200, and then 166, as rain delayed and finally ended the race. After a 3-hour delay at 113 laps, all the racers took to the track…..except for Franchitti who suddenly had a punctured tire and had to pit.
Stepping Out
I got all teary on the treadmill today during my workout.
Usually I just sweat and kick my own butt, but somewhere between miles 3 and 4 I got all emotional thinking about life and its many passages.
The trigger for me getting mushy was this: My gym looks out over a swimming pool, and today I watched a mom teach her little boy how to swim.
I was reminded of the same moments years ago when teaching my daughter how to swim…..and this week she graduated from college.

The Benefits of Origami
One of my favorite sayings when I pull a bonehead move is, “I am soooo human!” It’s compassionate, accurate, and usually makes me giggle at myself.
So I got a chance to say that today when, at a client’s office, I managed to sit down on the toilet and dunk my long jacket in the water.
Slosh.
Eyes wide open in horror. “Hold it!” I think to myself. Good thing I noticed, um, RIGHT AWAY.
Lean On Me
Driving home tonight I heard the first few chords of a famous song that always touches me deeply: “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers. That man can sing a plaintive tune. Take a moment and let his joyful wisdom wash over you: it’s a good reminder to lean on someone when you need to.
Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on
Please swallow your pride

TRULY Continuing Education
I read in this morning's LA Times that the world's oldest person to graduate college just got her degree! How cool is that?
NINETY-FIVE YEAR OLD Nola Ochs graduated, along with her granddaughter Alexandra Ochs, from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. (They grow 'em big and strong in Kansas. That's where I'm from.)
“I never think of my age,” she said. “We don’t die at a certain age. And if people didn’t know they were getting a certain age... I think they’d be better off.”
Ode to Moms
I honor moms everywhere by sharing with you a lovely note from my friend, Mary.
"I had been holding your Christmas gift, your mother's linens, in a kind of sacred state since you gave them to me. I've been taking care of a dear friend who is gravely ill, serving him meals on an old but lovely silver tray with placemats. One day, having run out of clean ones, I thought it would be perfect to use one of your mom's, thinking if not now...when?"
Mary, my mom would be especially delighted that you used her linens on a silver tray, stylish wench that she was. Joy It On, honey.
A Learning Moment
A friend and I were chatting about the obstacles to enjoying life that people bump into on their daily journey: change, judgment, guilt, doubt, the act of assuming, taking things personally – you know, the usual suspects.
And then she blurted out this pearl of wisdom: “You know, one way to get more enjoyment out of life is to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”
I know. Silly her.
